Read profileHypnotherapy is a therapeutic method that helps you access a different level of focused attention - often called a trance state - in order to work with thoughts, feelings and habits that you want to change. It draws on well-established psychological principles, including the idea that attention and suggestion can alter perceptions and responses. The therapist guides you through relaxation and concentration techniques to help you enter and make use of this state, then uses tailored language, imagery and suggestion to support conscious goals. Hypnotherapy is collaborative: you remain aware and in control throughout, and the therapist works with your values and consent to shape interventions that fit your needs.
Within a session the practitioner may use suggestion, metaphor and guided imagery to encourage alternative ways of responding to situations. These techniques are not about coercion or mind control; they are tools to help your mind notice options that might otherwise be hard to access. Many therapists also draw on concepts from cognitive and behavioural work, integrating practical strategies with hypnotic methods so that suggestions are supported by everyday skills and plans you can use between sessions.
Hypnotherapy is used for a wide range of concerns where patterns of thought, behaviour or physical responses are getting in the way of well-being. You may find it helpful for anxiety and stress-related issues, phobias and specific fears, low mood and motivation, sleep difficulties and certain kinds of pain or tension. Many people seek hypnotherapy to support habit change - for example smoking cessation or changes in eating behaviour - and to enhance performance in areas such as sport, public speaking and study. Practitioners also work with people on confidence, trauma-related symptoms when integrated with appropriate trauma-informed care, and adjustment to life transitions.
Hypnotherapy is often part of an integrated programme. Practitioners may combine hypnotic techniques with cognitive-behavioural strategies, relaxation training, or psychotherapeutic dialogue depending on what you need. If you have complex mental health concerns or are under the care of a GP or psychiatrist, a hypnotherapist will usually coordinate with other professionals to ensure your overall care is appropriate. While many people benefit from hypnotherapy, it is not presented as a single cure-all; it is one option among several that may support your goals.
A first session usually begins with a conversation about your history, current concerns and what you hope to achieve. The practitioner will explain their approach, discuss any questions you have, and agree practical details such as length of sessions, fees and any paperwork. You will work together to set clear, achievable goals, and the therapist will take a brief history to identify factors that might influence the way the work proceeds. This assessment helps shape the focus of subsequent sessions.
The core of a session involves an induction - a process that helps you relax and focus - followed by therapeutic work using suggestion, imagery or exploration. You remain aware and can open your eyes or pause the process at any time. After the hypnotic part, the therapist brings you back to ordinary waking awareness and you debrief what you experienced and learned. Many practitioners offer audio recordings or brief exercises to practise between sessions so that the benefits are reinforced. Sessions commonly last between 50 and 90 minutes, and the number of sessions you need depends on the issue, your response and agreed goals.
Hypnotherapy is distinguished by its deliberate use of trance and suggestion as therapeutic tools. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), for example, focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours through active skills training and homework. Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape current life, often through long-term exploration. Mindfulness-based approaches teach present-moment awareness and acceptance. Hypnotherapy can overlap with these methods but its defining feature is that it intentionally shifts the focus of attention to influence learning and emotional processing in ways that may be quicker or feel different from talk-only approaches.
You do not have to choose hypnotherapy in isolation. Many practitioners integrate hypnotic methods with cognitive or relational techniques to suit your preferences. The most effective approach is the one that matches your style and the nature of your concern. If you prefer experiential work, imagery and guided processes, hypnotherapy may feel particularly accessible. If you favour structured skills training, an integrated programme that includes CBT elements may be more suitable. Discussing these options with a practitioner can help you decide which route to take.
You may be a good candidate for hypnotherapy if you are motivated to change, comfortable with guided imagery and relaxation, and looking for a practical, outcome-focused approach. Hypnotherapy can be effective across ages, though practitioners will adapt their methods for children and adolescents. It is important to tell a therapist about any current medical or mental health treatment you are receiving so that the work can be coordinated safely. Some conditions require cautious planning and collaboration with medical professionals; an experienced hypnotherapist will discuss suitability and refer you on if another form of care is more appropriate.
When you search for a practitioner, look for clear information about training and registration. Qualified hypnotherapists in the UK will often be registered with recognised professional bodies, show details of accredited training programmes, and maintain regular professional supervision. You can ask about their experience with the issue you want to address, whether they integrate other therapeutic approaches, and how many sessions they typically work with. It is also reasonable to inquire about fees, appointment format - face-to-face or remote - cancellation policies and what to expect at your first appointment. Many therapists offer a short initial consultation so you can gauge whether their style fits you before committing to a full session.
Choosing a therapist is a personal decision. Trust your instincts about feeling understood and respected, and check practicalities such as location, availability and whether the practitioner is registered with an appropriate professional association. If a therapist explains their approach clearly, answers your questions and sets realistic expectations, you are more likely to get helpful results. You can use the listings above to compare practitioners, read profiles and contact those whose experience and approach match your needs. Booking an introductory conversation is a good next step to see whether hypnotherapy feels like the right path for you.
Remember that hypnotherapy is one of several evidence-informed approaches that can support change. Taking the time to find a practitioner who is well trained, experienced with your concern and someone you feel comfortable with will make the process more effective and respectful of your goals.
